This Week in Sports History

60 Seconds. One Great Moment. A Lifetime of Sports Memories.

This Week in Sports History is a fast-paced, entertaining 60-second weekly radio feature that takes listeners back to the unforgettable moments, remarkable achievements, and legendary personalities that have shaped the world of sports.

Each week, host Mike Janela turns back the clock to showcase memorable moments from that week in sports history—bringing the stories to life with the perspective of someone who has spent his career covering sports, entertainment, and the people who make headlines.

One week it might be Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s seemingly untouchable career home run record. Another could revisit the “Miracle on Ice,” when the U.S. Olympic hockey team stunned the Soviet Union. Or listeners might go back to Michael Jordan’s iconic final shot as a Chicago Bull to win the 1998 NBA Championship. Baseball, football, basketball, hockey, the Olympics and more—if it made sports history, it is part of the story.

About Mike Janela

Mike Janela brings an unusually broad sports and entertainment background to This Week in Sports History. He hosted and produced the hour-long Padres Social Hour for the San Diego Padres, airing live seven days a week on FOX Sports San Diego. The program combined Padres and MLB coverage with news, pop culture, and live fan interaction, with guests ranging from baseball great Mark McGwire to entertainment icon Snoop Dogg. Mike's on-air roles include New York Mets Gameday and Social Media Host since 2019, as well as time spent as an NFL, NBA, and NHL correspondent for MSG Networks.

For five years, Mike also traveled the world as a Guinness World Records judge and media personality, eventually becoming global head of sports records and head of the North American Records Management Team. Along the way, he interviewed personalities including LeBron James, Kelly Ripa, Alex Trebek, and Jyoti Amge, and appeared on Today, Jeopardy!, Good Morning America, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, as well as ESPN, MTV, FOX and numerous other national and local outlets.

Mike began his career as a newspaper reporter and as a play-by-play broadcaster for minor-league baseball and college sports, giving him a foundation in both sports journalism and storytelling.
